What's a Black Hole?

Published

At dinner, Aura asks Daddy what a black hole is. He starts explaining confidently, but as he describes how gravity is so strong that nothing escapes, not even light, he starts to spook himself. His hair gets wild, his eyes go huge, and his voice gets dramatic. Aura watches calmly, chin in her hands, and finally asks "Could one eat us?" Daddy hesitates, then admits not for a really, really long time. Aura asks "Like, after dinner?" Daddy: "After billions of dinners." Aura nods. "Okay. We're fine." Mummy laughs in the background. Hamzu keeps eating.

Aura asked Daddy what a black hole was. He scared himself answering. She did not.

At dinner, Aura asked Daddy a question.
"What's a black hole?"
Daddy got excited. He started to explain.
A black hole, he said, is a place in space where gravity is so strong that nothing can escape. Not a spaceship. Not a star. Not even light. Light is the fastest thing in the universe and even light cannot get out. Once something falls in, it never comes back.
Daddy's eyes got very big as he said this. He started to wave his hands. His hair got slightly wild.
Aura watched him calmly. She put her chin in her hands.
"Could one eat us?"
Daddy paused.
He wanted to be honest. But he did not want to scare Aura.
"...Not for a really, really long time," he said.
"Like, after dinner?"
"After... billions of dinners."
Aura thought about that.
"Okay," she said. "We're fine."
She picked up her fork and went back to eating.
The nearest black hole is hundreds of light-years away from Earth. That is a very, very long way. Far enough that Aura will be fine tonight. Far enough that you will be fine too.
Eat your dinner.
